When Women Pursue Justice

For approximately ten years Ms. Togut created numerous murals in inner city neighborhoods of NYC as an artist-in-residence working with schools and community groups.  After leaving the city in 1994 she was invited to participate in the creation of this  full block mural honoring women who fought for justice in 2005.  Twelve primary ancestral portraits were painted as well as many smaller ones.  Ms. Togut was asked to depict labor organizer Clara Lemlich, one of the primary twelve women, as seen at the top center of the mural.  The process of painting this portrait involved research, lifesize drawing transferred to the wall and painting directly from a five story scaffolding as seen below.
