Lifeforce Installations
|
I began my career as a public artist in 1980 with an outdoor theater mural commission for the City of Palo Alto, Ca. By 1984 I was actively pursuing installation opportunities in the public realm, such as Artpark in Lewiston, NY ('84), the Three Rivers Festival in Pennsylvania ('85), and the Connemara Conservacy in Texas ('87). From 1986-87 I was a National Studio Artist at P.S. 1 in Long Island City, NY where I created installations in three rooms at the top of the building. Between 1988 and 1996 I worked in Bedford Stuyvesant, NY, starting with a garden environment entitled, Propagation, depicting community members renewing their neighborhood. This installation and others incorporated simulated stained glass layers (transparent, painted elements), creating an ephemeral and constantly changing, holographic effect. I created related, nature-based installations at artist colonies, Yaddo in Saratoga, NY ('92), and VCCA in Sweet Briar, Va ('93). In 1994 I moved to upstate New York where I continued self-created public art with a series of Lifeforce Installations along regional waterways. Between 1996 and 2001 I created ephemeral installations along the Schoharie Creek ('96); the Hudson River ('97-98); and the Rondout Creek ('99, 2001). In 2002 I created a Lifeforce installation at the Brydcliff Colony in Woodstock, NY, and in 2004, at the Deep Listening Space Gallery in Kingston, NY, followed by other installations through the present. Currently I am working on a series of site-specific, outdoor installations in Shokan, NY where I live and work. |
