Landscape Painting

This body of work depicts mystical, beautiful and calming places where people have gone for centuries. Since the 1970's I have enjoyed working directly from nature in the plein air genre of landscape painting. I work with watercolor, acrylic and oil paint on these images. Often I become intimate with the same site by painting it over and over, at different times of the day and season. Such a process is extremely challenging while facilitating a deeper and richer understanding of nature's brilliance and changeability. This kind of artmaking is for me, a kind of meditation practice. While it is not my primary purpose as an artist, it informs all of my work and precedes my work as a site-specific, environmental artist, working in nature. Some of the works seen here are depictions of the same pond, surrounded by mountains, a place of peaceful repose near my home/studio. In the warm months it is also a place that I swim with my therapy dog. |
