Cycles of Life Wallpieces
|
Since entering the field of art and healing ten years ago, I developed a series of works that explore the cycles of life, death and regeneration by honoring specific people and animals. A selection of these works were exhibited in the Living With Uncertainty; Cycles of Renewal Exhibition at the Deep Listening Space Gallery in Kingston, New York in 2004. Some of the wallpieces honored well, ill or deceased individuals and pets as a means to propagate a state of peace and acceptance. One series was created with art components from my best friend, Enid Kaplan, a wonderful artist and teacher, who passed away from leukemia. Another series honored the deceased wife of a good friend and his family. Creating these works was a fulfilling mode of bereavement and a means of embodying the spirits of those who have passed on. Typically these works take on the persona of the person or animal they honor as I become the vessel. Compositions, palettes, highly textured surfaces and dimensionality of materials vary from piece to piece. I began
using the mandala form in my work with those touched by cancer and
other illnesses or disabilities. On this wall are mixed-media mandalas
I've created, composed with special papers, paint, semi-precious healing
stones, broken glass, roots, bones, etc. |
